Ride to Knowledge

The project

The Ride to Knowledge project will offer innovative family learning activities for families with children aged between 5 and 16 years in cycle maintenance and repair. Engaging families in cycling and cycle maintenance is not only a fun recreational activity, it also helps to promote healthier lifestyles, exercise, and gaining skills and knowledge in a vocationally related area of work.

The activities will be designed to meet the needs of a wide target group of beneficiaries from absent fathers through to families with disabled parents or children. The activities through the Ride to Knowledge project will provide a platform from which all children and parents can learn new skills together that will be of use and can be taken back into the home environment, even after the project has ended.

The Ride to Knowledge project will coincide with the expansion of the Bikes 4 All social enterprise. The enterprise has recently moved into new and larger premises with the vision of engaging a wider target of beneficiaries, in particular families. Now based in the city centre, the project is more accessible than before and will be able to offer more support in the delivery of the Ride to Knowledge project.

Delivery

Activities during the programme will include the basics in cycle maintenance and repair such as how to fix the most common and persistent cycling problems like punctures and brake/gear adjustments. Each family will work towards completing a Learning Passport of Achievement. The course activities will increase in difficulty as the weeks progress and the most confident learners will work towards designing and building their own bike from scratch, using parts collected at the Bikes 4 All workshop. Literacy and numeracy activities will be integral to the development of all learning activities.
